Life in Vacant Spaces is proud to have brokered the site for Brown Town’s debut exhibition and zine launch, a powerful kaupapa centring Māori and Pacific artists reclaiming space through creativity and storytelling.
Guided by the whakataukī Iti Noa Ana He Pito Mata: From The Withered Tree, A Flower Blooms, the exhibition and first volume of the Brown Town zine bring together Tangata Whenua and Tagata Moana artists to share works of memory, healing, resistance, and joy.
Distinct in form yet rooted in mauri, these works are a love letter to whenua, languages, tinana, and collective memory. The launch event gathers community in celebration, marking the beginning of what is envisioned as a growing archive of Indigenous voices.
The exhibition is open in a vibrant city pop-up at 181 High Street from Saturday 30 August – Saturday 13 September, with limited copies of the zine available.
